1. Grading: You will be graded in a few different areas:
1st qtr:
50% daily work (including participation)
50% projects
2nd Qtr:
60%= *daily work-
*when we start sewing, you will have a daily participation grade that will depend on how much work you get done in class.
30%= sewing projects- 3 units plus community service project
10%= ABC project/Designer project
2. Class Content- see attached sheet
- Supplies needed: you will have access to the supplies that the school has on hand. Anything else you will be responsible. Keep this in mind when you choose sewing projects. We have an assortment of small pieces of fabric used mostly for craft or quilting items- whole yard pieces of fabric will need to be purchased.
4. Sewing requirements: [2nd qtr]
After all of the bookwork is completed (as a class) each student will choose what they would like to create. All students must complete three (3) units to complete the class. You will have free choice as to what you create, but the number of units will be determined by Mrs. Downs.
Examples of what you may create:
Pajama pants = 1 unit
Fitted skirt, pants or shirt = 2 units
Simple T-shirt = 1 unit Lap or baby quilt = 2 units
Quilted placemat or pillow = 1 unit
Prom dress or fitted jacket, Photo Quilt = 3 units
Note: the number of units will be determined by Mrs. Downs and the student. If there is something that you would like to create, just ask for help. I have a number of patterns available for you to use and can help with ideas. Some units may have a .5 unit value. The number of units is determined on the complexity of the project, the number of measurements that you will be using and the use of directions. Not everyone will be working on the same project or at the same pace.
5. ABC’s of Design-[2nd qtr]this is an ongoing project which will be due the last week of the semester. Each letter of the alphabet will need to be addressed at least 2 times. The letter can be explained through definition with graphics, samples or other types of visuals. The project must be clearly written and explained and the project must be in alphabetical order. Use the workbook to jot down ideas as they arise.
-- you may wish to use a 3 ring binder to put your project in.
6. Designer project- [2nd qtr]-
Each student will research a designer of choice. I would expect to have a minimum of 10 slides for this presentation. Assume that I have never heard of this designer so you will want to include information such as: where were they born and other biographical information, what kind of life did they live growing up, any education?, influences for their choice of career, what are they known for?, examples of their work, if alive, what are they doing now, etc. Find out as much as you can about this particular person so the rest of us can learn something new.
7. Your own tote: each one of you will have your own tote in the green cabinet. Please be responsible for keeping your stuff organized and in order.
Orders for Patterns and Haans- at students expense
